National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for The Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. These days National Donut Day (or Doughnut should you be so inclined) is usually the day that donut shops hand out free donuts to entice folks into their establishments.
And while many chain donut places are giving away free donuts, many of the Mom & Pop donut shops could probably use a boost in sales. So if you aren't near a place giving out free donuts and don't feel like grabbing a donut from the local coffee shop or your local grocery store (around here they all seem to have Krispy Kreme boxed donuts for sale), how about stopping at your local corner donut shop this Friday and ordering a donut to help out locally owned businesses? My favorite donut shop happens to be Stans in Santa Clara...seriously the best warm glazed donuts you'll ever find. I might have to pick up one...or four...
Are you going? If so, I'd love to see pictures of what you got! :D

Cassaendra - Not doing donuts today. I leave on a red eye flight tonight for quick back east trip and my weekend will be filled with airport and fast food so I tried to have a healthy breakfast this morning! (though there could be a donut somewhere along this trip :)

My husband did his part. LOL He bought more than a dozen donuts at our fave Stan's in Santa Clara to give out to his co-workers. Who can resist a warm donut?

Caroyln - Nothing beats a Stans glazed donut when it's just made. I actually did a test with coworkers once when Krispy Kreme first hit our shores years ago, and Stans beat them hands down!
