SIMPLY CLASSIC - The Junior League of Seattle
This cookbook has a copyright of 1993. I do not know where I got this cookbook. I've cooked out of this cookbook a few times.
I'm not sure why this is a favorite cookbook of mine since I've only cooked a few recipes. I do know that over the past fifteen or so years that I've had this cookbook, I've picked it up and perused it many many times. It has no photos, so that's not what seems to tempt me. I do admit that it was one of the few Jr. League cookbooks I bought way back then that looked more "professional" than most. Hardbound, nice typesetting and visually appealing even without glossy photos of the recipes. But more importantly, the recipes just sounded good...simple, wonderful, homey with, back then, just a bit of an edge. For some reason every time I've picked up Simply Classic I've always felt that each recipe was doable and something I'd not only eat but would love to present to loved ones or guests.
Standard chapters. No photos but simple illustrations throughout with several full page "paintings" of tablescapes and Seattle scenes. The recipes ask for fresh, simple, easy to find ingredients. Directions are clear, simple and easy to follow. Most of the recipes don't look like they would take a ton of time and effort to make.
I know in the past I've made several of the Simply Classic recipes, Chicken in Many Mustards being my favorite (ingredients included Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard and sweet hot mustard). My list is quite long of the recipes I'd like to try: Spicy Thai Beef Strips, Vanilla Walnuts, Crunchy Glazed Pecans, Peppered Herb Steaks, Hearty Loggers Chili with Sausage, Sparkling Pineapple Sangria, Sleep Over Coffee Cake, Berry Best Muffins, Coffee and Cream Cake, Savory Cheddar Pie, Pecan-Crusted Chicken, Champagne Chicken, Espresso Chip Cookies, Rhubarberry Crisp, Triple Cheese Tortellini Bake, Pasta with Shrimp and Tomato Cream, Potatoes Gruyere, Boat House Salad, Christmas Salad, Scallops with Red Pepper Sauce, Cream of Any Green Soup, Fiesta Corn Soup, Broccoli Walnut Stir-Fry, Wild Mushroom Saute, Baked Polenta with Cheese.
I have so many cookbooks and though my intention is to only make a dish or two from each, I think I might have to try quite a few more of the recipes in this cookbook.
I would suggest this book as a wonderful present (especially in the spring, for a bride, for mothers day, or ahem, for yourself).
Junior League cookbooks always have so many tastey and approachable recipes. I'm looking forward to seeing what you make!
