EXTREME HALLOWEEN - The Ultimate Guide to Making Halloween Scary Again by Tom Nardone
This book has a copyright of 2009. I bought this from Amazon this past summer. I have never cooked from this before.
Okay, technically this isn't a cookbook. It only has two or three real recipes in it. But it's a fun book and the "recipes" or food presented might not even be edible. But it's a book on Halloween so whats not to love. More importantly it's a book on "scary" things to do and create on Halloween. No cute little fairy decorations, no sweet little orange cupcakes, no simple little carved pumpkins. This is for true scary Halloween aficionados.
The guy who wrote this book is the same guy who does the Extreme Pumpkins. Though don't think that the pumpkins are just one pumpkin carved using a stencil. As you can see by the cover, pumpkin decorations in this book usually involve at least ten pumpkins and a good hacksaw to complete your creation. You'll find information on tools to use to make these pumpkin monsters and materials to help those monsters come to life. The book also gives good icons that let you know how much time a project may take, how much money may be involved and how difficult the creation my be to make.
And oh the creations. We aren't just talking pumpkins here. We're talking costumes, house decorations, invitations...pretty much anything you could do to make your home scary both inside and out. How about that live "door" that when the kids come to knock the door is alive and spooks them. The zip line ghost to go streaking past as the kids walk to the door. Flaming pumpkin tiki torches. The ideas to make a "haunted lavatory" had me laughing with delight. Trust me, next time I have a Halloween party at my house, you might think twice about needing to use the facilities! And of course, there are the demented ways to dress up your baby. This isn't a big book, but I really enjoyed the possibilities of ways to scare and have fun with my favorite holiday.
As for actual recipes or food that can be served at Halloween parties (I dare you to serve them at regular dinner parties!) there were Bloody Brain Shots, IV shots, Eyeball Martinis, Urine Sample Gelatin Shots, the Pumpkin Vomiting Guacamole, Roasted Squash Skulls, Meat Head, Banana Pudding Blob, Brain Goo, and my favorite, The Roasted Human Being (seriously cool if you like meat and have a crowd to feed....wahahahahahaha).
Fun book. I'm hoping that I get to use some of these ideas soon!
