There are those that swear by red licorice. There are those that swear by black licorice. I happen to be one of those that likes either one, though I suppose I prefer the black. These days tubs of red liqorice sticks bought at Costco seem to be everywhere. You can find red vines at pretty much any movie theater. Black licorice? Not so much.
These Liquorice Allsorts from Taveners Proper Sweets (and yes, they spell it differnent than us, spell check keeps informing me) remind me of the little multi-colored licorice bites I used to see all the time as a kid. Can't remember the name (maybe from Brach's??) but they have a bit of a coconut taste to them and they are not overpoweringly black licorice tasting. Not very sweet at all either. Didn't even bother asking how Mr. L liked them as he's not a fan of coconut candy. The Assistant seemed to like them fine. Did bring back a bit of my childhood.
A 5.8 ounce bag of these cost $2.99 at World Market. Probably the best value so far as there were quite a few of the little licorice nuggets in the bag. I keep picturing these tucked into a little glass candy dish my Grandma used to have sitting in the living room.
You might guess that British candy is the most popular import, as that's mostly what I was able to find at World Market. Curse the British Food Store for closing as I was hoping to have more savory items on the menu during the London Olympics. I actually have made several British dishes from my cookbooks but am not finding time this week to post them. Be prepared to be inundated with recipe posts next week!

nice article! i am glad to be here and enjoy being here!

what can I do to freshen up old stale allsorts?

John - I would assume that you would do the same thing as regular licorice. Try heating them in the microwave for about 5 seconds or put them into a Ziploc bag and pour hot water over them, then let them sit for about 15 seconds.
