I'm not sure why this hasn't happened before, especially since I've followed local sports teams for so long. But during the Giants run to be the World Series Champions (oh man I never get tired of that) I made a friendly wager with some friends in Philadelphia. Should the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League Pennant, I'd send them San Francisco Sourdough Bread. Should the Phillies win instead, I'd get me some Tastykakes.
Not really knowing what a Tastykake was, I figured a small package would show up after the Giants win. Imagine my surprise when this nice tin with several different versions of Tastykakes showed up at my door. Inside were multiple packages of Chocolate Cupcakes (chocolate iced), Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes (milk chocolate coated cakes with peanut butter filling), Chocolate Junior (yellow layer cake), and Butterscotch Krimpets (iced sponge cakes). There might have been other versions...but the dessert fairies descended upon the box and gobbled up a few packages before I wrote down what was inside. I'm just sayin'.
My favorites have to be the Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes. Followed by the Butterscotch. But honestly, I wouldnt kick any of them out of bed. You'll also find us doing a little "Go Giants" happy dance, whenever a Tastykake passes our lips. Yum.
And, to be honest, if I had to send some bread to Philly it wouldn't have been a problem. I think it's very cool to introduce local products to those that don't always have access. So, once the Sharks make the playoffs (or the 49ers, cough cough) don't be surprised if you get a call willing to wager some local items here, for some local items where you live.
The World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Humm Baby!!
