HAPPY CESAR CHAVEZ DAY - Today is a holiday here in my state. Health Departments are closed. Coroners offices are closed. But I had to explain over and over to families that called today that it was a holiday...pretty much nobody knew. And I don't even want to tell you how many folks I had to explain who Cesar Chavez was. I honestly thought that today was a California only holiday but it turns out seven other states celebrate this day (Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin). To find out more about Cesar Chavez go here.
BOYCOTTING GRAPES - I was pretty young back in 1965 when the grape boycott was going on. I was completely in the dark as to WHY the boycott was, I just knew that various folks around me weren't eating grapes because "it wasn't the proper thing to do under the circumstances". I remember some folks getting very angry about the boycott (on both sides) and many long discussions...which I fear I completely ignored. If I wanted grapes I ate them. Who was this man Chavez who said I couldn't have grapes?! I do admit that as I got older I always wondered when I was buying grapes if it was "politically correct" or not.
THE NUMBER OF GRAPES - Any idea how many single species varieties of grapes are out there? Take a guess. Now triple it, cuz there are quite a few. To find out about the varieties go here. Most are used for wine.
GRAPES BY NUMBER - Grapes are low in calories and make a pretty good snack. To burn off a handful of grapes (about 10) takes 9 minutes of walking. Wait....that seems like an awful lot of exercise for just ten grapes! To find out more about grape calories go here.
